| “Coming October 17, 2008 the sun will rise continuously for 36 hrs (1.5 days). During this time the American countries will be dark for 1.5 days.
It will convert 3 days into 2 big days. It will happen once in 2400 yrs. We’re very lucky to see this. Forward it to all friends.”
Have you read of this news? Is this true? ^_^

| Well that intrigued me, lol, so I stuck it into google, and found someone's weird answer. But I thought this group might enjoy it, so here it is. (This is not my philosophy, but someone else's.)
Here's the real truth: Due to the centrifical force of water flowing in flushed toilets the Earth will wobble on it's axis thus creating a 36 hour sunrise. Because there are far more (flush) toilets in the northern hemisphere than in the southern hemisphere an imbalance is created in equalibrial inertial motion and the force of torque. This is caused primarilly because the toilets in the northern hemisphere flush with a water flow that moves in a clockwise motion and the southern hemisphere opposite that, if there were the same number of flush toilets flushing at the same time in both hemispheres then the opposing forces would balance each other out and there would be no event of any kind or at most a negligable barely measurable blip. Be glad that the 36 hour sunrise is the only consequence of these physics in play as there is the very real possibility of the planet ripping itself apart from the core if the engineers who created dishwashing machines didn't have the foresight to build all dishwasher machine sprayer wheels to spin in a natural and neutral clockwise motion. If the physics of the toilets and the dishwashers were combined in such an unfortunate blunder of engineering then our planet would persish and leave behind only a small wormhole that would spin irradically.

| This is an interesting notion, but should be dismissed out of hand as being something posted by a scientifically ignorant person.
The point is that at most one day to the next only varies by just a fraction of a second. The last time that major events on the Earth actually made a difference in the rotational velocity of the Earth was as a result of the ocean collapsing in the Indian Ocean... which not only increased (not decreased) the speed of the Earth, but it also created the massive tsuami that wiped out millions of homes (and 10's of thousands of lives) in the Indian Ocean basin. It was genuinely international news on the front page of every newspaper and the lead story of every television news broadcast.
That increased the speed of the earth by a couple thousandths of a second per day. Hardly something to worry about in the long run, but interesting on a scientific basis. The drag of the Moon on the Earth gradually slowing the Earth down has much stronger impact.
It is true that depending on where in the orbit of the Earth around the Sun that the length of the "day" will vary by about a minute or so... above and beyond the changes due to seasons. This is caused because the Earth is in an elliptical orbit around the Sun. You should keep in mind that the orbital path of the Earth around the Sun is so close to a perfect circle that an attempt to hand draw that circle with a compass on a piece of paper would have a much larger eccentricity (the amount the ellipse deviates from a perfect circle) than the orbital path of the Earth.
If you want more information about leap seconds and how they are calculated, you can look up this link:

OK, the school teacher in me is going to go back in a shell. This is one of those stupid internet rumors that needs to be ignored, but it is fun to talk about even so. If it sounds stupid, it likely is. |

| LOL....first, the whole toilet flushing thing itself is a lie, they all flush the same direction. Second, the earth spins at approx 2k miles an hour and in order for such a long day to happen, it would have to slow down so fast that when it did happen....you'd either go splat into something, die from instantaneous acceleration at massive speeds, or be flung off the face of the planet. Not to mention the oceans going where they please. i laughed so hard i had to change my underpants....go spidey! | |

Actually you are wrong.. for some reason water does spiral down drains in opposite directions in the north and south hemisphere..

Actually you are wrong.. for some reason water does spiral down drains in opposite directions in the north and south hemisphere.. thats because of the opposite orientations to the earth's rotation and gravitational force in the north and south hemispheres. (geology major)

I really can, I have won more bets with that ridiculous claim than I can recount. I get the newbs on the dock right after their first payday. LOL. But I only ask to them pay-up if they are insufferable jerks.

| thats weird, cuz i coulda sworn that last time i was in australia the water went down the toilet in the opposite direction. and anyway it couldnt be the Coriolis effect, thats the same thing as saying the Foucault pendulum changes which way trees fall over. | |
